A wedding reception doesn’t truly become a party until that one guy maybe hit the open bar a bit too hard, loosens the rental tuxedo up a bit and starts getting loud on the dance floor. That’s exactly what the Class A Boost by Pigtronix is. Its sole purpose is to make your signal louder and more exciting without coloring your tone and I mean c’mon it’s already rocking the tuxedo!

The Class A Boost offers 20db of clean gain to your signal. Why would I need that? A few reasons would be getting your guitar up closer to line level, not getting buried in the mix when you want to switch from rhythm to lead and my favorite; letting the Class A Boost really drive the front end of an old tube amp.

Power is an interesting thing for this pedal. One quick note, this pedal cannot be ran by battery. The Class A Boost can run on either the supplied 18v power supply or a 9v power supply. If cleanliness is your true purpose for this pedal, stick with the 18v power supply.
If you are like myself and over analyze every situation, experimenting with less power will give you a different breakup. Not too long ago I reviewed the Dan Electrode, the genius in this power supply is you can run pedals anywhere from 3 volts to 9 volts. Here’s the product of an afternoon with a humbucker equipped Strat into the Class A Boost into a 60s Fender Bassman.
This is 20db of gain with the 18v power supply that comes with the Pigtronix. It’s really driving the front end of the amp!
Cranked 18 VoltThis is halfway, so we’ll say 10db still with the Pigtronix power supply, notice how it cleaned up the signal a bit and is a little darker.
Half 18 VoltNow here is 20db with a 9v power supply. You’ll hear the pedal working harder and a little bit of natural compression.
Cranked 9 VoltLast but not least, 20db into only 3v. Listen to how trebly and fuzzy the distortion gets, love it!

Great pedal, love the fuzz when it is cranked.
